Gratitude widens our attention

Gratitude can help us gently hold both beauty and what feels hard.

It’s not about bypassing difficulty.
It’s not about forcing positivity.
It’s about widening the frame.

Practising gratitude is not a new concept. But it is often misunderstood.

When times are tough, it can be hard to feel or express what we feel grateful for. Yet, this is often when we need it the most.

When I first started my gratitude practice, it was difficult for me to express gratitude during a challenging period of my life.

I started with what I intrinsically knew.
My pets. My home. My loved ones.
Soon I expanded it to my senses.
What I could see. Feel. Touch. Smell.
And of course, the good moments, when I felt they were there.

“Grateful for : Blue skies. Fresh water. Clean sheets. Warm air.”

And this was enough.
I felt the shift within and the world around me responded.

Over time, alongside my breathwork and meditative practices, I noticed that my gratitude had expanded to hold the heavy with the light. The yin and the yang. The hurt and the pain. Something had shifted.

“Grateful for : Hard lessons that offered clarity and growth.”

You might begin simply.
Write down three things you are grateful for today.
Then try it again tomorrow. And the next day.

Don’t worry if you miss a day. Or a week, or a month. Even a year. You can return to this practice any time. Anywhere. Write it in the notes in your phone. Buy a gratitude journal or simply say it in your head or out loud to the sky.

There’s no right or wrong way.
It’s simply the practice of gratitude that widens your attention and returns you to the present.
